Stephen Montague
was born in Syracuse, New York
in 1943, and grew up in West Virginia and Florida. He studied piano, conducting
and composition at Florida State University, received a doctorate from
Ohio State University in 1972, and won a Fulbright Scholarship to Poland
where he worked in the Experimental Music Studio of Polish Radio, Warsaw,
1972-74. In 1974 he came to England first as a composer with the Strider
Dance Company, then settled in London permanently as a freelance composer
and pianist, and touring world-wide.
Stephen Montague's music has been described as a fusion of minimalism
and romanticism; a further influence has been his advanced work in Computers
and electronics which began at Ohio State and has continued through extended
periods of work at Studios in Warsaw, Chent, Stanford, London, and Paris
(IRCAM) to the creation of his own home studio in 1989. His compositions
have been performed and broadcast world-wide, featuring in numerous international
festivals. As a "virtuoso pianist" (New York Times), he has
recorded for all major European networks, and performed at numerous places
and festivals. In 1985, he formed the Duo Montague/Mead Piano Plus with
Philip Mead. He also collaborates with Sculptor Maurice Agis providing
multi-channel sound environments for Agis's giant inflatable sculptures
Colourspace and Dreamspace. He was founder of Sonic Arts Network (UK)
and is currently Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Society for
the Promotion of New Music (UK). He is the winner of many awards for his
compositions, and was recently appointed Associate Composer with the Orchestra
of St John's Smith Square, London, for the 1995-96 season. During 1992
and 1995 he was a Guest Professor at the University of Texas at Austin
and since 1993 has been Visiting Guest Professor at the Royal College
of Music, London. In addition to his ventures as a composer, he enjoys
hiking, camping, canoeing, bicycling and, as a former Florida JC Tennis
Champion, is still an active club tennis player in England.
